The ones that come into my class that are maybe considered “behind” or “below,” are my favorite to work with. Those are the ones who, when you see growth, even if it’s just a small amount in the first couple months, are hooked for the entire year. Because they know they can do it. You can see it in their eyes and in the way they carry themselves, they’ve gained confidence and now they’re thinking, “I’ve already made this much progress and I have a whole year left. Think about how much more I can do.” That’s the most gratifying part of being a teacher: getting them to see that for themselves.
